08719844416Your dishwasher is one of the most hard-working appliances in your kitchen, so it’s important that you keep this workhorse in tip-top condition. Whether you have a freestanding dishwasher, integrated dishwasher, slimline or full-sized model, one of the simplest and most effective ways to look after your dishwasher is to keep the salt levels topped up.
Using dishwasher salt keeps the water in your appliance soft. This prevents the build-up of limescale, which over time can damage your dishwasher’s internal components, reduce its efficiency, and even clog the jet sprays.
1. Prevents limescale build-up, which over time can damage your dishwasher
2. Extends the lifespan of your appliance
3. Helps the detergent to dissolve, reducing streaks on dishes and glassware
4. Achieve better cleaning results — no more gritty pots
5. Preserves your glassware, preventing it from going cloudy
Dishwasher salt goes in the softener unit, which is usually found on the bottom of the dishwasher. If you’re not sure where it is, check your manual. To add the salt, carefully remove the unit’s cap by unscrewing it, then pour in the salt to completely fill the reservoir. If there’s a little water already in there don’t worry, as the salt will displace it when you put it in. Once you’ve filled up the reservoir, screw the cap back on.
When you’ve topped up the salt, it’s a good idea to run a short wash with your dishwasher completely empty. This will rinse away any loose salt crystals, preventing any possible corrosion inside your dishwasher.
Don’t be tempted to cut corners and use ordinary table salt in your dishwasher, as it could damage your appliance. Table salt is much finer and could clog up the system. Whether you’ve chosen a top brand like Bosch dishwasher, AEG dishwasher, or Miele dishwasher, or a more entry-level model, you don’t want the hassle and expense of an early replacement.
Now you’ve topped up your dishwasher salt, make sure to check the level once a month. Some models have an indicator light, which comes on to remind you to top up.
