How to unblock a Dishwasher

There are many signs that your dishwasher might be clogged whether you have got a freestanding, slimline, full size or integrated dishwasher. There could be a considerable amount of standing water at the bottom, indicating that it hasn’t fully drained. Your dishes are still dirty due to blocked spray arms or unpleasant smells due to a build-up of food and bacteria. You could even be hearing unusual noises like gurgling, which could be the water trying to break through a blockage or your dishwasher has displayed an error code. Dishwashers are also connected to your sink’s water supply and drain system. If one is blocked, your dishwasher won’t get the water it needs either.

6 Steps on how to unblock your dishwasher

Step 1: Begin by unplugging your dishwasher and inspecting the draining hose at the back. You may need to move your dishwasher to do this. Run your hand along the hose to check for kinks or obstructions. If this is okay, then inspect further.

Step 2: Then manually remove as much standing water as possible using either an absorbent cloth, towel or sponge. Alternatively, place a baking soda and vinegar solution into the standing water, leave for around 20 minutes and if it starts to drain, rinse with hot water then run the rinse cycle.

Step 3: Next, unscrew the filter, usually found at the bottom, either at the back corner or the base of the bottom spray arm (see your manual for further information), and rinse it under running water to clear any debris or clean it with a sponge.

Step 4: Did you know? Most new dishwashers come with a small built-in grinder, however, food or paper labels from jars can still clog the filter.

Step 5: Ensure the spray arms are free from clogs by clearing the holes with a toothpick or pipe cleaner or removing them completely and blasting water through the holes to dislodge any debris.

Step 6: Then manually remove as much standing water as possible using either an absorbent cloth, towel or sponge. Alternatively, place a baking soda and vinegar solution into the standing water, leave for around 20 minutes and if it starts to drain, rinse with hot water then run the rinse cycle

Preventing Dishwasher from blocking

How can you prevent dishwasher clogs?

It’s important to keep on top of maintenance of your dishwasher to prevent any clogs, just like any other appliance. If you invested in a model from a top brand like an AEG, Samsung, or Bosch Dishwasher, you won’t want the hassle and expense of an early replacement. This includes…

      1. When loading, ensure to scrape off leftover food from dishes – do not rinse
      2. Cleaning outside and inside your dishwasher and any parts you can access
      3. Checking and cleaning the filter regularly
      4. Running a hot water cycle
      5. Using a specialised dishwasher cleaner annually
      6. Run your dishwasher regularly, and always use dishwasher detergent
